The Reveal

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010 35

I’m ready. Although I just recently wrote that I have a secret, I’ve been holding it and thinking about sharing it with you for quite a while now. And it’s time. Like I revealed in my last post, this is a good thing to share, although parts of me feel vulnerable in stepping into this goodness.

So, here goes…A dear friend of mine, Sarah of Picturing Extraordinary, and I have been invited to have an art show of our photography! This is a fabulous opportunity and I can’t quite believe it has come our way. The show will be at a local community theatre where our work will be displayed for the entire run of a play in January and into February. We get to  host an opening night reception, and will be inviting everyone we know (and everyone they know!) to come see our photography. Incredible. And really good, right?

And so if it’s really good, why the secretiveness? Why the vulnerability? Having a show of my work, telling you about it, inviting people to the opening, putting prices on my photographs…all of that makes this creative journey very real. January 21, 2011 will become a day that I unabashedly declare myself a photographer. And that feels, well, vulnerable. It calls forth those imposter demons. It heralds the whispering questions like, “who do you think you are?” and, “that seems awfully fast — do you think you’re really ready for a show?” It brings up fears that people won’t like my work. Above all, it puts me out there in an authentic and honest way, in a space where I’m allowing any and all to see a part of me. Yes, they will be looking at my photographs, but my photographs tell my story. They reflect who I am.

But…I’m ready. I like where this creative journey is taking me. I like my photographs. I like what they say about who I am. And I want to share them with you (if only you all could come!) and anyone else who wants to take a look. And that is all that matters. Just be true.

    Congrats on the show!!!
I finally opened my photos up to the let strangers see when I moved to NY in 1996 and started showing at local libraries, Colleges, Music shops and Coffee shops!! I now usually have 3 shows a year and often more because people will request to have me back to a shop or library.
I have had 4 gallery exhibits which were totally amazing!!!
I wish I could attend you opening it will be very exciting for you – can’t wait to hear how it went
P.S. I also have a secret that I am very excited about but can’t tell until January!!

This is such wonderful news!!! Sharing your work takes courage — but how liberating!! Your photographs are wonderful – there is a reason why you were asked. Nothing but the best for you !!

Okay, I had “pregnant” in the Meghan Secret Sweepstakes, so that’s two bucks down the drain.

    CONGRATULATIONS!

If being invited to show your work isn’t validation enough to banish the imposter demons then you have a real problem. And besides, if people don’t like your photos they probably won’t have the brass to tell you, anyway.

  21. Kevin says:

It’s taken me a long time to be comfortable with the title of “writer” and even though I own a restaurant, the name”chef” was also hard to embrace. I believe the reason it’s hard is that any kind of creative work reveals a bit of our soul to the outside world, and to be willing to be that open leaves anyone vulnerable to attack. But great work won’t ever come without it.

A Writer Yes But A Photographer I Am Not
    By D.K. Milgrim-Heath©2010
A writer yes but a photographer I am not-
I imagine photographs for my writing really alot!
For my poems one needs to imagine that photographic image-
As I write of experiences when I make that written pilgrimage.
About my beloved city of NYC photographic memories help me state-
All my memories there of which I do remember for with I relate.
Fabulous memories of Europe where once I did roam-
Especially of Switzerland’s beauty of once that was my home.
For the childhood experience one has their photographs-
The serious ones plus ones that goes for all the laughs!
I enjoy my childhood photos and those of my children when once small-
I’ve got blowing bubble photos of them too precious and all!
I discover new photos daily as each of us don’t you?
Different Photographs help me write the way I do!
Photos being Real, imaginary and in memories make my mind sway-
As I write different poetic pieces day after day.
