this mermaid is being called,
lulled,
pulled by the ocean.
she sees the emeralds,
the turquoises,
the teals,
and it feels like home.
she aches to dive in,
feel the familiar,
the tide against her flesh,
her hair fan out in the waves.
yet, her gills feel inconsequential,
not quite developed.
or more apt, not quite regrown.
she wants to swim,
to delve deep again.
but she is still too much…human.
but, it’s coming,
her scales,
her surety,
that old knowing,
rebirthed into a greater truth.
it’s coming,
and the ocean will rush to greet her return…

I had the pleasure to share my story at Lincoln’s True Stories Live this past weekend. If you have heard of The Moth, you have an idea of what this storytelling event is like. The theme for the evening was “The One that Got Away.” I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to stretch my comfort zone, stand in my truth, and share my story. You can check it out here…

Warrior on, friends. xoxo

me tubWash it all away,
The silence, the disappointment, the heartache.
Let the water soften your skin,
Loosen the hardened pieces of pain that attached themselves to you.
Allow the silky soap to glide over your body,
Soothe the raw wounds you garnered from opening your heart.
You owe that much, and so very much more, to yourself,
To not get hardened, to not turn back.
You will go back into battle with love as your ammunition.
You are a Love Warrior and you will fight on.
But first, bathe…

cloudsWhat if we were clouds?
Cumulous clouds,
Billowy and full.
All of our hard edges
Softened by the weather
Of life,
Of love.
What if you could fall into me
And I could fall into you?
What if we could hold each other in that gentle space
of the sky?
Above the noise,
The din,
The inconsequential.
What if we let ourselves move
In ways that were natural?
Not dictated on shoulds,
Or thoughts,
Or supposed to be.
What if we took shape
Together?
Me into you,
You into me.
What if we were clouds?

I am a mermaid
Cast upon the shore
But this shore is a prairie
And I all I see before me is grain
Yes, the grain feeds me
But…I need the water
Shipwrecked, of sorts
Who will bring me to the sea?
Take me back
Quench my body in undulating waters
I am a mermaid
