I am a mermaid
Cast upon the shore
But this shore is a prairie
And I all I see before me is grain
Yes, the grain feeds me
But…I need the water
Shipwrecked, of sorts
Who will bring me to the sea?
Take me back
Quench my body in undulating waters
I am a mermaid
Build a strong root in yourself,
A groundedness that is always there.
Then grow, trust that your foundation will hold you, get stronger.
Let your heart create branches that reach, far out to spread love.
Even in winter, be warm, be sturdy, and love.
the heat overtook her as she opened the door to walk the dog, memory flashed with reminders that “it’s the humidity.” the thunder rolled in the distance, rain imminent. it would have to be a quick walk, despite the dog’s urging to go farther. the thick air added more weight to the heaviness she’d been carrying in her chest for months. as the clouds rambled above her head, storm thoughts did the same through her mind. but then…then, a spark, a sparkle. the dew collected on the tender threads of a spider web shimmered like diamonds. and in that moment she knew the storm was passing. the spark would enable a flame to burn the heaviness she’d been carrying too long. and soon, she’d be the diamond.
remember when we walked out the door, straight to the peach trees?
how we reached up, grabbing the plumpest of fruits?
when we took a bite, how the sweet juice ran down our chins onto our chests?
the stickiness lingering on our lips as we sucked the nectar out of life…
She said the manzanita trees reminded her of me,
With their red bark and smooth branches.
I said that’s interesting because Manzanita is one of my favorite places on this earth.
She said these trees are sturdy, strong.
She said they’re beautiful and rich.
She said they’re like me.
I drank in her words, trying to believe they were true.
